‘I don’t want to hide myself’: Teen with alopecia says illness will not define her

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Middle schoolers have enough anxiety to deal with, even on their best days. Imagine being a seventh grader and losing your hair.

Alopecia is a medical condition that hits just one in 1,000 children, but to those kids, it is life-changing.

"People automatically think I have cancer and I don't like that, like I'm kind of annoyed by it," Jocelyn Restrepo-Quintero said.
