There is still plenty of mystery surrounding the tragic disappearance of over a hundred settlers from the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island. The true fate of the colonists who vanished without a trace has never been confirmed, but one ghostly legend has been passed down through the centuries.
The chilling tale begins when the settlement was ravaged and destroyed by a hostile Native American tribe, leaving very few settlers alive. One of those said to have survived the attack was Virginia Dare, the first child born on American soil to English parents. To survive, Dare’s mother took her daughter and assimilated into a friendly local tribe. From there, stories about her future vary.
Some say she grew into a beautiful woman who received many advances from Natives, which she turned away and in turn, was cursed by her dejected suitors. Others say she had a dispute with a local witch doctor and was turned into a rare white doe when she died.
To this day, people claim to see Dare’s ghost in the form of a white doe roaming the area where the first colonists settled on Roanoke Island. Local hunters also tell tales of an elusive white deer that they can never catch. Think it’s just local folklore or something more?
