Action 9: Homeowner Let Down By Buyers Club Membership

None — A Matthews homeowner hoping to save money on floors and other items joined a pricey buying club, but said the club didn't deliver on its promise.

Nancy Couture thought the membership would save her money since she is remodeling her 23-year-old house, installing teak wood floors, a new bath vanity and more.

"[I purchased] a sliding glass door with mini-blinds, I purchased a window, I purchased a stove [and] I purchased a refrigerator," she said.

But Couture was upset she found out she couldn't buy any of those things using her DirectBuy membership, which cost her nearly $5,500.

The discount buying club in Fort Mill advertises access to all kinds of household products, but Couture said it was useless to her. "Well, every time we wanted to buy something they could not provide it for us," she said.

DirectBuy offered to knock $500 off her next order, but she wasn't satisfied.

Action 9 contacted DirectBuy. A national spokesman said they don't promise to carry every brand or every product.

But after the contact, the company worked out an arrangement with Couture that will give her bigger savings on cabinets, which made her happy.

Still, she said she is wary of buying club memberships and advises others against joining them.
