None — A company that has been the focus of three recent Action 9 reports has shut its doors and left town.
American Shingle has shut down its Charlotte operation. Several customers have complained that the company, which came into Charlotte last November after a hailstorm battered hundreds of homes in the area, has taken payments for roofs but not done any work.
Five other company offices in the southeast have also shut down.
"Every one of them basically on the same day shut down [and] bank accounts were closed," BBB President Tom Bartholomy said.
Left behind are homeowners like Donna Canup, who said she made a partial payment of $3,200 in May for a new roof, but got nothing.
Canup said she showed up at American Shingle's office and found the door locked.
Last week, even as American Shingle was preparing to close, the company's sales manager painted a very different picture.
"It's not a scam," he said to Action 9's Don Griffin. "There are roofs being put on right now."
Now, the company is not responding to Griffin's calls or emails.
The BBB said American Shingle customers should contact their insurance companies.
"If you signed over that insurance check to them … and they haven't put your roof on yet, call your insurance company now," Bartholomy said.
Bartholomy said customers should also send certified letters to American Shingle in Atlanta to cancel their contracts and demand their insurance company's money back.
Also, all customers who didn't get roof should file a complaint with the state's attorney general and the state insurance commissioner, Griffin said.
The CEO of American Shingle told a Georgia TV station that the company's troubles began due to an unexpected slump in sales, causing cash flow problems. The company has $300,000 on hand that it plans to return to customers, he said.
