None — Terrance McKoy said he packed up his DirecTV equipment and canceled his service a year ago.
The company told him he'd have to pay a $220 cancellation fee, he said, but then charged him twice as much.
"They saw it on the computer, where I was supposed to be refunded $220 because I had been overcharged," McKoy said.
He said DirecTV promised many times to refund the money to his debit card within six to eight weeks. However, he said the company never did it, except for a $21 credit in December.
Then, McKoy said, a debt collector pursued him for a $198 DirecTV bill. He said he told the collector he didn't owe the money, but it didn't help.
"So I paid that to prevent it from going on my credit report and messing up my credit," he said.
McKoy said he asked DirecTV for all of his money back, but got nothing.
"[It was] very frustrating," he said.
The Better Business Bureau said it has gotten nearly 40,000 complaints from DirecTV customers like McKoy, and that most stem from cancellation fees. It gives the company an F rating.
Action 9 dug into McKoy's complaint, and DirecTV reversed the early cancellation fee and refunded him more than $400.
"Thanks to you, I have a valuable lesson now," McKoy said.
Action 9's Don Griffin said anyone considering satellite television should read the contract and pay close attention to introductory offers and the cancellation policy and fees.
