Action 9: Woman happy after being let out of lease

Stacey Appling said she wanted to move out of her unit at the High Meadow Apartments because of mold conditions.

It all started when she said she noticed water dripping from her daughter's bedroom ceiling.

“It’s still wet underneath here, and there's water that comes from here,” Appling said.

Appling shot video of her ceiling leaking after a recent storm, and her hallway ceiling was so wet it moved when Action 9 pushed on it.

Appling said the mold and mildew inside the unit make her 4-year-old son constantly sick with allergies, so she moved him in with her mother.

“Sometime we're in the emergency room a lot, just -- he can't be here really because of the medical condition,” she said.

The manager at High Meadow did make some repairs, but Appling said it didn't help and that they were refusing to let her break the lease and leave.

So Action 9 went with her to the office. After our visit, the manager agreed to let Appling out of her lease immediately. He said he would keep her $595 deposit, but would waive two months of rent she'd refused to pay due to the mold.

Appling is excited about moving to a new place with her son.

“(I’m) ready to get my baby so he can live like a normal child,” Appling said.
