MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Customers said Melvin Madrid, who owns Mooresville Carpet and Flooring, took their money and took measurements, but didn't even start the jobs. They said they waited months for him to do the work or give them refunds.

Mike Jackson wanted hardwood floors. So, in August, he paid Madrid $8,000, half the total price.

"He didn't do anything, not one thing," Jackson said. "He looked at the house, took measurements."

He said that was all. Jackson said Madrid told him, "I'll take care of you. Don't worry. Everything will be OK and we'll get it done," but that Madrid wouldn't show up. "It's just been extremely exasperating."

Jackson said he gave it five months. Now, he's suing.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are going after Madrid in criminal court, on two counts of felony obtaining property by false pretenses.

Those charges involve Jackson and another customer, who Action 9's Jason Stoogenke spoke with.

Madrid denies doing anything wrong.

Stoogenke spoke with Madrid:

  • Stoogenke: "So you're being honest with people?"
  • Madrid: "Of course."
  • Stoogenke: "You're not taking their money and, then, just giving them the runaround?"
  • Madrid: "No sir."
  • Stoogenke: "Because it seems that way."
  • Madrid: "No. Nope. No sir."

He said he offered to return Jackson's money, but that Jackson never picked up the check.

Jackson said that's a lie, and emailed Stoogenke, saying, "Unbelievable!"

Always research contractors before you hire them. Search their personal names, not just their business names.
