CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — More than 50 units at the Public Storage on North Tryon Street in the University area were broken into late Sunday night.
Eyewitness News was at facility on Monday as frustrated customers tried to get into their damaged units and figure out what was stolen.
Shatrice Grimes was there to help her fiancé, who owns a flooring company and stores a lot of his tools at the facility.
"This is ridiculous," she said. "He has to go out and buy this stuff immediately because it's his work."
Grimes said a similar crime happened about two months ago at the same facility, and about $2,000 worth of tools were taken.
Police said they think the burglars in Sunday's incident may have crawled underneath a gate to get inside and then used a floor jack to open up the doors of the units. The break-in may be connected to several others in the area, officers said.
In April, burglars caused about $11,000 in damage and stole property from 22 units at Morningstar Mini-Storage on Mount Holly Road.
Huntersville police said there have been at least four break-ins at public storage facilities in the last six months. The latest was just two weeks ago, at a facility on Statesville Road.
"It's the work of a couple of guys that are very good at this, but we're going to catch them," Chuck Henson, with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, said.
Police said they don't think the suspects have owned a storage unit or worked at one of the facilities.
They are now looking at surveillance video to see if any of the crimes were caught on tape.
