CA mom fights bees, gives birth alone after getting lost in forest

CALIFORNIA — A shortcut turned into a four-day ordeal for a pregnant California woman, ABC News 10 in Sacramento reported.

Amber Pangborn went into labor last week while on the way to her parents' home. She ended up giving birth alone and lost in a national forest.

"I was told about this back road and people had shown it to me a few times but I'd never driven it myself," Pangborn told the station.

After a while she found herself low on gas and without cellphone service. She gave birth to her daughter, Marissa, around 5 a.m. The new mom was low on water and only had four apples.

With the baby in her arms, Amber had to fight off bees and mosquitoes.

"The meat bees came out and were trying to get the placenta, I was trying to get them not to sting her and I got stung trying to keep them away from the baby. But they went into the placenta," Pangborn said.

On Saturday she was able to start a fire, which was spotted by the U.S. Forest Fire Detection System.

A few hours later a helicopter found her and was able to direct a rescue team.
