Caretaker Accused Of Stealing Thousands

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A woman is accused of stealing $32,000 from the 83-year-old she was supposed to be taking care of.

Dot Jefferis said she hired Linda Simpson to help her with her medicines and other things and that Simpson came "highly recommended."

"She was a really sweet person," Jefferis said.

But a few months later, Jefferis said she noticed that her checking account was missing money.

"We discovered terrible discrepancies," she said.

Police arrested Simpson on Wednesday and charged her with a felony.

"I'm awfully sorry that this has happened to her life," Jefferis said.

Jefferis' neighbors said the incident made them think about their own parents.

"It's devastating to let somebody into your home who you trust and find out maybe they're not as ethical as they should be," Anna Lindsay Yarbrough said.

Jefferis said she went through an agency for help after the incident and said the company did several rounds of checks before placing someone with her.

"Background checks, driver's license checks, everything. The whole nine yards," she said.
