LAKE HICKORY, N.C.,None — North Carolina Wildlife officers are investigating after the Catawba County district attorney was involved in a boat crash Sunday night.
District Attorney Jay Gaither said he and his wife were in their boat when it collided with another boat in the water and they were thrown overboard.
Gaither said it was the couple's anniversary and they had gone out to watch the sun set on Lake Hickory.
They were heading back to shore and making a turn when the crash happened.
"Thank God no one was seriously injured or killed in this accident," Gaither said.
Gaither said as soon as he hit the water, he began looking for his wife. He said both were in shock after the crash and had to be pulled from the water by the people on the other boat.
Because his boat is older and does not have a kill switch, it kept going after the couple was thrown out and ran into a dock, striking a third boat and damaging a jet ski.
"It sounded like a bomb. The whole house shook. We had no idea (what happened)," said Vicki Goble, the owner of the dock.
Wildlife officials said alcohol was not involved in the crash.
