MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C.,None — Mecklenburg County residents' water rates are changing.
The way it is now, Mecklenburg County residents who use the least amount of water pay the least per gallon. People who use the most pay the most per gallon.
But utilities officials say those folks are paying too much, that it's not just a water bill, it's a sewer bill, and just because they use a lot of water doesn't mean all of it goes into the sewer system. For example, when they water your lawn often, most goes into the ground or the storm drain.
Under the new system, people who water the most should save about $50 per month while average customers should spend $1 to $6 more per month.
Courtney Massard and D'juana Black have six children so they use a lot of water and say their bills reflect it. They're happy to see their bills go down.
"A lot less. A lot less. A hundred and something less. I would love that very much," Black said.
But they don't want people who use less water to pick up tab.
"You know, that's like, now you cheating (them), now they (are) losing," Massard said.
The new rates kick in in July.
