CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials briefly evacuated a medical plaza building next to Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy in Elizabeth after someone reported a suspicious package in the building early Thursday morning.

Police and fire crews responded to the hospital campus on Vail Avenue and evacuated the 3-story building just before 9 a.m.
Hazmat crews were called to the scene to determine what the package might be, which police later said ended up being medical supplies.
Officials told Channel 9 that an employee spotted the package around 7 a.m. and called police, who then evacuated the building as a precaution.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department mobile command unit was dispatched to the scene and police cruisers had blocked off East 5th Street.

Officials determined the package was in fact medical supplies and allowed everyone to return to the building around 9:45 a.m.
CMC-Mercy is an adult acute care facility with 185 rooms which provides a wide-range of services, from emergency room care to surgery to rehabilitation.
