CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education has called a special meeting this Wednesday in response to the city leaders passing the $1.3 billion budget for next year on Tuesday night.
Schools will receive an additional $26 million this year, not the extra $50 million they requested, which still means teacher cuts for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
The school board will discuss several issues pertaining to teacher and employee layoffs at Wednesday's meeting, which should result in a more defined number of actual layoffs.
The board will consider approval of career status for certain certified employees, renewal of contracts for other certified probationary employees and recommendation for the non-renewal of contracts for other certified probationary employees.
More than 700 educators received layoff notices last month from superintendent Peter Gorman due to budget cuts.
