COACH'S CORNER: Richard Lewis - Head Coach Myers Park Boys Basketball

None — Myers Park head basketball coach has been coaching for 20 years total and 9 years with the Mustangs. His team had a great year this season but lost a tough game to Lake Norman in the sectional finals, 60-58.

A: "20 years total. 9 at Garinger High School; 2 as Athletic Director at North Stanly High School; and now 9 at Myers Park." Q: What's your greatest moment as a coach?

A: "Thats a tough one. every team and year is different ... Top 2.... Last year's team winning the sectional championship at Freedom ... and this year's team beating Hopewell @ Hopewell in the sectional semifinals."

Q: What's the biggest challenge of coaching high school age kids?

A: "Getting kids to buy into the TEAM concept. This year's team is a perfect example of what can happen when all the parts work together."

Q: If you weren't a coach what would you be?

A: "Haha. When I was a small kid growing up in Dallas Texas I always thought the guys riding on the back of the garbage trucks were really cool. So I wanted to be a garbage man. But when I was 10 we moved to the country outside of Dallas. We had horses, chickens and dogs so I developed a love for animals. I would be a Veterinarian if I didn't coach."

Q: What is your favorite school tradition?

A: "When we introduce our starters to begin the game we make their home town something exotic. For example: Starting at guard a 6'1 senior from Athens, Greece ... Griffin Shaw. We also play the Chicago Bulls intro music. Still gives me goose bumps! The kids love it!"

Q: What's your favorite pre-game meal?

A: "McAlisters Deli.'s The Big Nasty -- roast beef over gravy and cheese."

Q: Do you have any pre-game superstitions?

A: "No superstitions -- just a quick prayer."

Q: If there was one thing you could change about high school sports, what would it be?

A: "Better officials ... LOL!"

Q: Who is your coaching idol?

A: "Tom Landry and Coach K."

Q: What's the best advice you've ever received from another coach?

A: "The season is a long journey. Don't get too high on the victories or too low from the disappointments. Enjoy the total body of work that each season brings."
