Crews Make Changes To N. Tryon Intersection

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Changes at a north Charlotte intersection are a big concern for Michael Shermetta, who called it a recipe for a collision.

"If they are not going to stop oncoming northbound traffic on North Tryon when that light is green, then it should not show a green signal," Shermetta said.

The Charlotte Department of Transportation installed the traffic signal and a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of North Tryon Street and Eastway Drive. The light is always green, except when a pedestrian presses the crosswalk button. Then, it turns red.

Shermetta said he's concerned that the red light is difficult to see around the corner and will surprise drivers. He also thinks the green signal gives drivers a false sense of security by leading them to think they have the right of way as they merge onto North Tryon Street.

Hours after Channel 9 reported the concern, DOT crews changed the traffic signal, replacing it with an arrow that points drivers to the right hand lane.

The DOT said the intersection is still being evaluated and that crews will make any needed changes to ensure the area is as safe as possible.
