Fire Chief Dave Oplinger said in some parts, the water reached approximately five feet high and that time was critical in safely rescuing all 10 people.

One flood victim, 10-year-old Tiyauna Worley, said she climbed on a store shelf to try to stay above the water.

"I was just scared," she said. "I was like, I can't believe this much water is going through."

The water also flooded the basements of several homes, front lawns and local roads in the Mount Holly area.

It washed away part of the rock bed surrounding railroad tracks along Central Avenue. CSX officials said repairs were under way and could be completed late Friday evening.
