Doctor's Note Gets Driver's Seat Belt Citation Dismissed

STANLEY, N.C.,None — A Stanley man won't be fined for seat belt violation charge because he has a doctor's note, Channel 9's newspaper partner the Gaston Gazette reports.

A Highway Patrol trooper stopped 57-year-old Allen Green on N.C. 27 Thursday for failing to wear a seat belt.

Green said he has an elevated liver and an enlarged heart that keeps him from being able to wear a seat belt. He showed the trooper a letter from a doctor at the Gaston County Health Department that gives him the OK not to wear a seat belt, but the trooper still issued a citation, fining him $126.

"I'm having hard times making ends meet," Green said.

Green took the citation and doctor's note to the district attorney's office, where it was dismissed. District Attorney Locke Bell said his office generally dismisses tickets for seat belt violations if the offender can produce a letter from a doctor.
