Dozens Chase Emu As It Runs Free Through Rock Hill

ROCK HILL, S.C.,None — An emu ran loose in Rock Hill Tuesday, running down Chestnut Street, East Main Street and other streets in the East Town neighborhood, just east of downtown Rock Hill.

Dozens of people, including police officers, chased the bird through the neighborhood with little luck. Finally, 70-year-old Bobby Mangrum captured the bird with a fishing net, our newspaper partner The Herald Of Rock Hill reports.

Mangrum owns two emus and also keeps llamas and goats at his Porter Road home.

After catching the emu, Mangrum and police loaded it onto a horse trailer and took it to Mangrum's home.

The York County Animal Control officer on the scene, Roger Bradley, said the bird was first spotted near Interstate 77 and then made its way into the neighborhood.

Officers don't yet know who owns the emu.
