ROCK HILL, S.C.,None — Justin Hines was dedicated to two things: music and family.
The 19-year-old Rock Hill High School graduate was a promoter at Club Cascade, located on Riverview Road, and was looking forward to becoming a father soon.
But that was cut short Saturday when he drowned in an apartment complex pool.
The Rock Hill Police Department, Rock Hill Fire Department and EMS arrived at the Stones Crossing pool about 2 p.m. Saturday in response to an emergency call.
A woman who was at the pool with her husband noticed that Hines swam to the bottom of the pool, according to a Rock Hill police report. She thought nothing of it, but about two minutes later, she realized he had not surfaced.
Her husband retrieved the safety pole for the pool and tried to move Hines, who floated to the surface, face-down, according to reports.
Another man who had just arrived at the pool jumped into the water and pulled Hines out. One of the witnesses began to perform CPR, the report stated.
Hines was transported to Piedmont Medical Center but was pronounced dead, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast. An autopsy was performed Sunday, but officials could not yet confirm the precise cause of death.
But family and friends are already expressing how much they miss Hines.
Michael Tyree first met Hines a few months ago, but said it felt like they had been friends for years.
The two performed together in a dance group called The Nation. In a recent performance featuring the high-energy street dance called krumping, Tyree remembered Hines doing a flip off of his back during a routine.
They had been talking more about an upcoming show on Friday and how anxious Hines said he was.
"He always kept a smile on his face no matter what he was going through," Tyree said. "He always had a mindset to help people."
Cousin Mario Hines said Justin Hines was a good person who just loved his family, dancing and music.
"I love him, and I'll miss him," he said.
