CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — The Red Cross is helping a family of three after a fire damaged their West Charlotte apartment Tuesday night.

Flames broke out around 9 p.m. at the Elmsley Grove Apartments on Tyvola Road.

Jodi Fowler told Eyewitness News her child accidentally started the fire in her kitchen.

"My youngest was trying to cook and apparently the grease sparked a fire, and he did what he was taught to do and he left and called 911," Fowler said.

Firefighters helped a mother and her four children out of an upstairs unit. Their home was not damaged, so they will be able to return home.

Firefighters also helped a couple out of their second-floor apartment. The couple has since returned home.
