Graduation Holds Special Meaning For St. Stephens Senior

HICKORY, N.C.,None — St. Stephens High senior Holden Broyhill has spent most of high school growing up and figuring out his purpose.

A few years ago, he would have said he wanted to be a doctor.

"I wanted to be one, because I watched a lot of ‘House,' and I thought I could do it," the 18-year-old said. "I wanted a dog, a white picket fence, a nice house, the money. But God told me this wasn't for me."

Broyhill, who has attended East Taylorsville Baptist Church since he was a child, learned to listen to what God wanted him to do.

When he came to St. Stephens High four years ago, he joined Followers of God, also known as F.O.G., a Bible study group that meets in the mornings before school. This year, during the 30-minute enrichment period St. Stephens High has, Broyhill was allowed to host an extra Bible session for those who wanted to participate.
