Jason Burgess Chosen To Fill City Council Seat

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Charlotte City Council members voted Monday to appoint Jason Burgess to fill the seat vacated by his mother, Susan Burgess, who is terminally ill with cancer.

The council voted 8-2 in favor of the appointment. Jason Burgess, who is a surgeon, was sworn in late Monday night and will finish out the remaining 18 months of his mother's term.

The vote fulfilled the request Susan Burgess made when she resigned from council on June 7.

Jason Burgess promised to finish the term and then step aside so that voters can elect someone new in November 2011.

Council members elected at-large member Patrick Cannon to be the new mayor pro tem, a position also previously held by Susan Burgess.

Two dozen people applied to fill Susan Burgess' seat. To see a full list of those applicants, click here.
