HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — If you’re looking for some more traditional romance for Valentine’s Day, the Latta Plantation is offering Sweetheart tours.
The tour includes sweetheart stories from the Latta daughters during their courting days in the early 1800s, as well as excerpts from letters and love poems from the Sample family that lived in the home from 1853 to 1922.
Visitors will also learn about courting customs from the time. There will be a display of period dresses and a demonstration of English country dancing.
Tours will be Feb. 9 at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. or Feb. 10 at 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The tours are included with regular admission to the site of $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for students. Children, ages 5 and under, are free.
From noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 14, homeschoolers and families can come to learn about a Victorian Valentine’s Day. There will be talks on courtship practices, English country dancing, fan language, open-hearth baking and antique valentines. Visitors can make an old-fashioned valentine using a quill pen.
