Local Red Cross Needs Blood Donations

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Thank you for participating in our survey. Have You Donated Blood? Have you ever donated blood? Yes. No.

Recent wintry weather has had a negative impact on blood collections by the Carolinas Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross, the organization said.

Inclement weather has resulted in more than 2,000 units of blood not being collected in the area, the Red Cross said. The organization is asking that blood donors donate as soon as possible.

The Carolinas Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross provides blood to 103 hospitals and must have 1,600 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet patient needs.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood. Donors who are under 18 must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
