CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a deadly crash in southwest Charlotte.

It happened early Sunday morning on South Tryon Street at Erwin Road. Police said the road was closed in both directions after a vehicle flipped.

Police said Monday Ri’chard Anthony Donell Davis, 15, was driving a stolen Kia Optima along South Tryon Street on Sunday just after midnight when it crashed with a GMC Acadia.

CMPD said the preliminary investigation indicates Davis was traveling at high speeds northbound on South Tryon when he lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic. Davis struck the GMC on the front driver’s side. The Kia Davis was driving was reported stolen two days before the crash. Toxicology results are pending for Davis.

Davis was pronounced deceased on the scene by paramedics. The driver of the GMC was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Speed was not a factor on the part of the driver of the GMC.
