CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An impaired man was killed early Saturday when he ran off the road and struck a tree in east Charlotte, police said.

Officials with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on Central Avenue near Logie Avenue.

Authorities said 27-year-old Brion Michael Reed was driving over the speed limit in a 2016 Smart Car on Central Avenue when he entered a curve, swerved into the opposite lane, ran off the road and hit a tree.

Central Avenue was closed for hours while police investigated the incident.

Police said Reed was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

In addition to speed, officials said alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
