CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and SWAT members responded to a barricaded subject Thursday afternoon and six hours later discovered no one was inside the home.

It started with a shooting in the area.

One person suffered life-threatening injuries after the shooting at about 3 p.m. Thursday in a residential area near the Catawba River in west Charlotte, MEDIC stated.

The gunman allegedly shot a neighbor twice and officers responded to the scene, police said. Police said they know who the suspect is and plan to arrest them soon.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the neighborhood at Moores Chapel Road and Harbor Drive where Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers could be seen surrounding a home.

CMPD tweeted early Thursday night that SWAT responded to the scene of someone barricaded inside a home in the area.

Our crew on the ground could hear officers ordering someone to get out of the house.

The roads were blocked to motorists and residents since late afternoon.

“It’s probably been three hours now just waiting to get inside,” resident Kodi Klein told Channel 9. “It’s kind of tough because my dog is there and he’s by himself.”

Klein said it’s usually peaceful in the neighborhood.

“Usually, it seems like this area is a little bit countryside,” Klein said. “(There) doesn’t seem like a lot of crime happening around the area.”

Some neighbors said the man at the center of the investigation has been a problem for some time and it’s not the first time officers have been called to his house.

“They were just out here two weeks ago because he was flashing a gun around my neighbor, and they didn’t do anything about it then,” resident Ray Morgan said.

At about 10 p.m., police told Channel 9 the standoff was over after learning the person was not inside the home.

The suspect ran off before they arrived.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the CMPD SWAT Team was called out to deescalate the situation,” CMPD tweeted. “Ultimately, it was determined the suspect was no longer in the residence and the area was deemed safe.”

The shooting victim was taken to Atrium CMC.
