CHARLOTTE — One person was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries Friday morning after an incident at a west Charlotte chemical plant.
It happened around 10:15 a.m. at DyStar Carolina Chemical along Wilkinson Boulevard.
MEDIC initially said they responded to an explosion call at the facility.
Channel 9 later learned an employee of a third party group suffered facial burns and eye injuries while attempting to decommission a sulfuric acid tank.
According to the West Mecklenburg Fire Department chief, when an employee drilled into the tank, it caused a pressurized reaction. That reaction caused sulfuric acid to spray out of the tank and onto the worker.
The patient was seriously hurt and treated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital.
Chopper 9 Skyzoom captured images of the scene, where multiple emergency responders from Charlotte Fire and MEDIC were seen outside the facility.
The fire chief said a hazmat team joined the department to quickly clean up the spill, and no one else was hurt.
