Man passed truck before hitting woman head-on in deadly crash, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is dead after police said he passed a truck before hitting a woman head-on Thursday night in north Charlotte.

The crash happened just after 9 p.m. on Nevin Road.

According to police, 23-year-old Leonel Rios Pacheco was speeding southwest on the road in an Infiniti G35 when he passed a Cadillac Escalade near Lake Drive in a no-passing zone.

Police said after passing the truck, Pacheco struck a woman driving a Chevrolet Suburban head-on.

The woman was taken to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center Main with serious injuries.

Police said Pacheco was not wearing a seat belt and the impact from the crash threw him from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passengers in the Escalade were not hurt, police said.

According to investigators, excessive speed and passing in a no-passing zone were contributing factors to the crash. They said alcohol use may have also played a role.
