Police identify driver killed after SUV plows into Charlotte daycare

CHARLOTTE — A man was killed after a Honda CRV plowed into a daycare Thursday night in east Charlotte, officials said.

The Honda crashed just after 8 p.m. into the Smart Kids’ Child Development Center on East W.T. Harris Boulevard. The wreck happened after hours, so nobody was inside the building, police said.

Officials confirmed the driver, 26-year-old Harry Lee Winfield, died at the scene.

According to officers, Winfield was speeding in the left lane, lost control of the SUV, drove off the right side of the road and struck the daycare.

Authorities said he was not wearing a seatbelt, and that excessive speed contributed to the crash.

Police said there weren’t any other passengers inside the vehicle.
