CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating Charlotte’s first homicide of the year after they say a man intentionally hit two people, killing one of them and critically injuring the other.

It happened just before 2 p.m. Monday along the Plaza, just north of Central Avenue in east Charlotte.

When officers got to the area, they found two people who had been hit by a 2015 Kia Soul. MEDIC took both victims to the hospital with serious injuries.

One of the victims, 26-year-old Kendra Bagwell, died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The second person who was hit remains in critical condition, according to CMPD.

Reporter Elsa Gillis spoke with neighbors who were stunned.

“It didn’t take any time for the emergency vehicles to get here and everything was blocked off,” said Heidi, who lives nearby. “I saw a car turn completely backwards in the street, there were two people in the median, and one was being worked on strenuously.”

The driver of the Kia, 32-year-old Jason Mosley, was not hurt in the crash.

Officers determined Mosley intentionally caused the collision.

After interviewing with detectives, Mosley was charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injuries and driving while impaired.

“It’s terrible,” said another neighbor, who did not want to be named. “Charlotte’s got a terrible crime problem for murders and it seems like we’ve come so far in Plaza Midwood cleaning it up and it just seems like maybe we haven’t come far enough.”

This is not the first time Channel 9 has reported on Mosley.

In 2017, he was arrested after police said he and another suspect shoved a woman to the ground at the Arboretum, stole her car keys and then led them on a chase to South Carolina.

No other information has been released.
