YORK, S.C. — A woman is recovering after being shot when a fight broke out in York County Tuesday.
Police said the shooting happened after a fight between two groups of people on California Street.
Officers said about 10 people were involved in the confrontation, which escalated from words to blows to gunfire.
Investigators said a 54-year-old woman stepped outside to see what was happening and was hit by a stray bullet in the cheek. That’s when those involved in the fight scattered, according to police.
“The fight occurred here in the street," Lt. Randy Caddell with the York County Police Department said. "Half of the people who are fighting ran that direction and that's when the gunshots were exchanged.”
Police don't believe the fight was gang-related and they don't know why it started.
The woman was taken to Piedmont Medical Center and then flown to Charlotte due to the seriousness of her injuries.
Police arrested Aundraveious Laron McDowell, 31, of Clover was arrested.
