CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are trying to find the shooter responsible for the city's 24th homicide investigation of the year.

SLIDESHOW: Scene from Chopper after 1 shot in east Charlotte

Investigators said 40-year-old Toby Washington was pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center after he was found shot several times in front of the door of an apartment off East W.T. Harris Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

Police said Washington was involved in a fight at the St. John's Place apartments on St. John's Church Road.

Neighbors told Channel 9 the fight started between two women before their significant others later got involved. They said one of the women involved had been argumentative with her neighbors for weeks.

"This is not her first time having altercations with people, but now her husband is dead," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified.

Witnesses said they spotted Washington wielding a machete before gunfire erupted.

Channel 9 reporter Casey Wood spoke with Washington's wife early Thursday morning about what took place.

Regina Washington was a witness and said the shooting happened just outside the stairwell. She told Channel 9 she was one of the women involved in the argument and was confronting her neighbor's girlfriend.

She then said that her husband went to talk to the woman's boyfriend next door and that another person in the apartment confronted her husband.

"They were standing there talking, diffusing the whole  situation, and the friend from out his apartment came running out and shot my husband three in the back and one time in the head," Regina said.

Police haven't found the shooter and no description of him has been released. Chopper 9 Skyzoom captured officer's efforts as they tried to track the gunman down.

"The suspect that we believe was involved left on foot. We called K-9 resources out to see if we could track the suspect," said Capt. Rob Dance, with CMPD's North Tryon Division.

Neighbors have suggested the shooter may not live at the apartments and may not have been part of the fight. Police haven't confirmed that information and are still questioning witnesses to find out where to look next.
