SALISBURY, N.C. — An 11-year-old was shot and critically injured during a gathering at a home in Salisbury Thursday night, police said.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on Harrel Street. Police said they learned about the incident after the child was taken to the hospital by family members.

Officials said the child was taken to Rowan Medical Center before being transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where they are in critical condition.

Officers said family members gave contradicting stories about what happened.

According to the Salisbury Post, family members at the hospital told police the bullet came from a passing car. People at the house on Harrel Street, though, reported the child was in the living room and the shot came from the kitchen.

Police did not confirm, but the Salisbury Post reported that people had gathered at the home to celebrate the prison release of Tai Mosley, who was charged in connection with the 2019 murder of a 71-year-old man.

No arrests have been made in connection with Thursday’s shooting.

Channel 9 crews on Friday could see police speaking to people who appeared to live at the house where the child was shot. Neighbors told reporter Tina Terry they were shocked by the news.

“Makes me sad because it could have been my child, you know,” said Alvin McCorkle. “I hope the child makes it.”

On that same street less than a half-mile away, a 7-year-old girl was shot and killed while she was sleeping in her grandmother’s bedroom. A’yanna Allen died in December 2016 when someone fired shots into the family’s home.

Police never found the gunman.
