14-year-old girl trying to cross highway struck, killed by tractor-trailer, coroner says

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A tractor-trailer struck and killed a 14-year-old girl trying to cross a Lancaster County highway Wednesday afternoon, the coroner said.

The collision happened at about 4:10 p.m. on Highway 9 near Potters Road by the Lucky 99 convenience store, which is east of Lancaster.

An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

The teen was trying to cross Highway 9, troopers said. The girl attended Buford High School, according to the coroner. School district officials said that additional counselors will be at the school on Thursday.

The Lancaster County School District sent the following statement: “We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our students in a tragic accident today. We will have additional counselors on-site at Buford High tomorrow.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
