Siblings killed in Union County crash, troopers say

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Troopers are investigating after siblings were killed in a crash Saturday night in Union County.

The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Sandy Ridge Road and Austin Road.

According to troopers, 17-year-old Alejandra Ruiz Diaz was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu with her 11-year-old brother Luis Miguel Geronimo Diaz in the car.

Troopers said Ruiz was traveling North on Austin Road from a stop sign when she pulled out in front of a 2012 Ford Super Duty Truck that was heading west on Sandy Ridge Road. The Ford collided with the Malibu, pushing it off the right side of the road and into a storage shed. Troopers said the Ford truck flipped in the roadway and stopped.

Alejandra and Luis were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck and his passenger were not hurt.

Troopers said the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash. The Union County District Attorney’s Office is consulting with troopers to determine if charges will be filed against that driver for excessive speed.

A GoFundMe has been started to help the siblings’ parents as they grieve the loss of their children. You can donate here.
