2 former Charlotte mayors come out against Amendment 1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pair of former Charlotte mayors took to YouTube Monday to urge North Carolina voters to reject Amendment 1.

Harvey Gantt, a Democrat, and Richard Vinroot, a Republican, appeared together in the video opposing the state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage.

The video was released on YouTube Monday morning by the group Protect All NC Families.

The duo said the amendment’s passage would have “unintended consequences… that may harm women, children and families.”

“If you vote against it, it won’t harm anybody,” Vinroot said in the video.

The amendment appears to have strong support across the state, according to a recent poll by Raleigh-based Public Policy Polling. The measure has maintained a 20-point lead.

However, the group’s research shows that the more informed voters are, the less likely they are to support the amendment.
