STATESVILLE, N.C. — A local manufacturer of waste and recycling equipment will close facilities in Iredell County this winter, a move impacting nearly 100 workers.
Charlotte-based Wastequip’s chief administrative officer, Nick Wiseman, informed state officials that two Toter LLC facilities in Statesville — at 841 Meacham Road and 2220 Speedball Road — are expected to permanently close on Dec. 22, our partners at The Charlotte Business Journal reported. Wastequip is Toter’s parent company, our partners at The Charlotte Business Journal reported.
About 96 workers will lose their jobs at Toter LLC, according to the Worker Adjusted Retaining Notification that was filed on Oct. 23. Impacted positions include assembly and machine operators, maintenance staff and other jobs. The specific employee count at each location is not immediately clear.
Candice Ramseur has worked at Wastequip’s Toter LLC in Statesville for seven years. The company announced the jobs that will be lost will be in assembly, maintenance and operations.
“A lot of people work here,” Ramseur said. “We have a lot of mothers, grandparents, a lot of people getting ready to retire, and now all your years are just gone.”
The company manufactures waste and recycling equipment. The company says it is consolidating its production into existing facilities where it can lower costs, an executive for the company told our partners at the Charlotte Business Journal.
“This is a business decision and is not a reflection of the performance, commitment or effort of the employees in Statesville,” said Nick Wiseman, with Wastequip.
Russell Turner has worked at the company since 2019 and said over the holidays he will be looking for a new job and putting his trust in a higher power.
“There are other places, and I know I’ll find one because I put my hand in God’s hand,” Turner said. “I’m not going to even worry about it because the good lord is going to take care of me.”
