ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Troopers responded to a serious crash near China Grove in Rowan County.
The crash happened on Interstate 85 southbound at mile marker 66.
North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said the driver, a grandmother, fell asleep behind the wheel and drifted into another lane. She over-corrected and the vehicle rolled.
One lane was shut down for nearly two hours while authorities investigated the accident.
Six people were in the car. Two children, Emonia Johnson, 6, and Efrain Johnson, 9, were flown to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. The girl was ejected from the vehicle and the boy was partially ejected. They were not wearing seatbelts.
Gwendolyn Shaw, 69, was charged with careless and reckless driving and failing to secure a child passenger. Two other children -- 9-year-old Treasure Kelly and 11-year-old Thomas Kelly -- were also in the car and wearing seatbelts. Arthuly Shaw, 70, was also a passenger.
Chopper 9 flew over the scene where a car could be seen crashed into the woods.
The traffic was backed up five miles from the wreck. All lanes reopened at 3:30 p.m.
