CHARLOTTE — North Carolina is making $20 million available to expand childcare services on college campuses affected by Helene and Tropical Storm Debby, Gov. Josh Stein announced.
The funding is part of a $75 million grant awarded to the state for childcare recovery in areas still picking up the pieces from recent disasters, according to the Hickory Herald.
State officials say hundreds of centers were affected by those storms.
Schools can apply for the grant and the money to build new centers or renovate old ones.
NCDHHS says only 16 of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges currently have childcare on campus. About 10 of the 17 UNC System campuses have some form of on-site childcare.
