IRMO, S.C. — A small earthquake shook an area just outside Columbia Wednesday morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey said a 2.2 magnitude earthquake was detected shortly after 8 a.m.
According to officials, the earthquake was centered about 4 miles northeast of Irmo, which is about 20 minutes from Columbia.

Wednesday's earthquake is the second to occur in that area of the state in a week.
The survey said a 1.4 earthquake rattled an area near Winnsboro in Fairfield County on July 10.
