CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police in Charlotte know it can't last, but they're hoping the month of March is an indication that they are on the right track.
For only the second time in the last 30 years, Charlotte has gone through a month without a single homicide reported.
"It's always good to not have to have any victims for any period of time," said Captain Cecil Brisbon, who took over CMPD's homicide unit in the middle of March.
The last time the city went without a homicide in a calendar month was in February of 2011 -- before that police say you have to go back to the 1980s.
The last homicide in Charlotte was reported on Feb. 25 -- it was only the seventh homicide of the year, compared with 10 at the same time last year.
Captain Brisbon gives a great deal of credit to the patrol officers working the streets who have been able to prevent murders, and he says the break in new cases has given his detectives time to focus on two unsolved cases this year.
One of them was the murder of Keith Houston, who was gunned down near a bus stop on Tuckaseegee Road on Feb. 17.
"Right now we don't have a lot of information to go by, so this is our plea to the public to give any information they may have," said Brisbon.
Keith Houston's grandmother, Mary Houston, is hoping someone will give police the information they need to solve the case.
"Somebody knows something, so I wish they would come across and say something you know," she said.
