ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — More than 300 pounds of marijuana was found hidden in a refrigerated trailer carrying mangos, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said.
Officers from various departments were working in a joint operation when they identified a suspicious tractor-trailer at a Rowan County truck stop on Tuesday, investigators said. It was heading from the southwest border to New York with a cargo of mangos, according to officials.
Investigators said they approached the driver, 41-year-old Hermilo Gomez Jr., and he gave consent to search the vehicle.
Investigators said they found approximately 317 pounds of marijuana hidden among the cargo of mangos.
Gomez was charged with two counts of trafficking marijuana, one count of maintaining a vehicle and one count of conspiracy to traffic marijuana.
