York County staff members are coordinating with the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services to resolve the overflow and remediate the area. County officials stated Wednesday that a thorough investigation is underway into why the spill occurred.
The York County Little Allison Creek Pump Station is equipped with an emergency generator and an alarm notification system. Neither backup system responded following the power loss due to a wiring issue that supplies power to the pumps, according to county officials.
Officials said addressing the equipment failures is a top priority to prevent a similar failure in the future. In response to the spill, crews immediately initiated remediation procedures set by state environmental authorities.
Official water safety guidance remains limited strictly to the immediate area surrounding the overflow near Little Allison Creek. The county directly notified the small number of affected residents and began posting advisory signs in the immediate vicinity.
County officials confirmed that no broader water safety advisories or restrictions have been issued for Lake Wylie.
York County officials said environmental testing will continue in the impacted area for several days to ensure the cleanup is effective.
