A Sherrills Ford fire captain, Bradley Long, drowned last summer while searching for a missing swimmer in Lake Norman.

On Saturday morning, the Sherrills Ford community participated in a 5K at the fire station on Sherrills Ford Road to honor Long.

The money raised will go toward fire prevention education and scholarships.

Some runners took on the course in full bunker gear, with a helmet and even and air tank.

"No matter where we are, we have to support each other no matter what the cause is," firefighter Bob Foster said.
