STATESVILLE, N.C. — Authorities said a 7-year-old boy was hit and killed by a car while riding his scooter on U.S. Highway 70 west Saturday night.
Dylan Menscer was declared dead at the scene by N.C. Highway Patrol officers. He was hit 50 yards west of the intersection of Bristol Drive and U.S. 70, troopers said.
The driver, 26-year-old Stephanie Keever, told officers she was driving between 50 and 55 mph in 45 mph zone when she hit Menscer.
The Statesville Record reported that Menscer was struck from behind on a hill at 9:30 p.m. Troopers told the Statesville Record that Keever's line of sight was obstructed on an already dark road.
Officials said Menscer should not have been in the roadway and should not have been riding with the flow of traffic.
Neighbors told the newspaper that Menscer lived just a quarter-mile from the accident and was known to ride his scooter around the block.
