YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Investigators said no charges have been filed after a bar owner fatally shot a man at his establishment in Rock Hill over the weekend.

Deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Hideaway Club on Baskins Road around 1 a.m. Sunday.

They said they found a 28-year-old Christopher Elkins with a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Deputies said there was an altercation inside the club involving several people. All were asked to leave and escorted to the parking lot by employees.

“We were watching television and all the sudden we heard two gunshots,” said Kaniya Hart, who lives on Baskins Road. “More than 10 police officers and two ambulances rode up. We could see some officers running up there.”

Officials said that’s when Elkins tried to get back into the club and began assaulting the 76-year-old club owner at the door.

According to a release from the York County Sheriff’s Office the owner “produced a weapons during the assault and fatally shot the victim.”

Joette Stevenson, who also lives on Baskins Road, told Channel 9 she knows the owner.

“In order for him to pull out a gun to shoot somebody I've got to believe that the man took him too far,” Stevenson said.

Residents who live in the neighboring community were equally as shocked by the shooting.

“I understand people have to protect their business and I know people have to protect themselves,” said Nicole Vargas, who lives nearby. “I guess it is a judgment call of when it's appropriate.”

Investigators have not provided further details of the assault, and have not yet identified the owner of the bar.
