ROCK HILL, S.C. — NYPD investigators call it a loosely organized gun smuggling operation that originated in South Carolina.
Eight people from Rock Hill have been indicted for allegedly funneling firearms from South Carolina all the way to New York City and selling them on the black market.
"New York authorities and the U.S. Marshal's Office contacted Rock gave us these people's names and asked us to find them," said Rock Hill Police.
They said the ringleader of this gun smuggling operation was Earl Campbell.
NYPD investigators said he caught the bus from South Carolina and traveled to New York City numerous times over the past year, and according to them, Campbell carried at least 14 illegal firearms in his luggage and sold them on the streets of New York for at least three times the cost.
Authorities also arrested Kendall Danielle Jones. They said she often traveled to New York with Campbell and helped him make his purchases.
Authorities said what the two didn't know is they were selling those guns to undercover agents with NYPD.
Eyewitness News stopped by Campbell's home on Monday night. The woman who answered the door seemed unaware of Campbell's indictment.
Authorities in Rock Hill said they're relieved to have these guns and the suspects off the streets.
"It is a great day when we can work together and actually catch some and take the guns off the streets," said a Rock Hill police officer.
