A year after Florence, NC's Crystal Coast still struggles to recover

NORTH CAROLINA — It's been more than a year since Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina, leaving a path of destruction in Emerald Isle.

There are a number of repair projects that still haven't started. Among them, many of the parks and ocean access points.

The storm also caused extensive damage to the iconic pier.

"There's a 230-foot pier that has to be demolished and reconstructed ," Alesia Sanderson from Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation said. "A six by ten dock, a kayak launch, everything's going to have to be completely rebuilt."

The town is now accepting bids for the remaining projects.

They hope to have most of the repairs done before tourism season next year.
